Omaha... I had no idea

Now, of course, my heart is in Des Moines, but that's no reason to avoid day-tripping. And here I hadn't a clue that Omaha had so many festivals. By my count, they are hosting 10 from May to September alone.

I discovered this little gem of a fact as I was leafing through my copy of the 2011 Omaha Visitor's Guide (we can't really afford a big vacay this summer, so we're thinking of doing mini ones within driving distance).

When most people think of Omaha, they think of the Henry Doorly Zoo, the College World Series and steak. What they don't realize is that Omaha is also ripe with fun offbeat things to do and see that don't involve fuzzy animals, baseball or beef. As a transplant to Omaha from the East Coast, I learned this through five years of exploring and listening to long time residents. Here are five of my favorite offbeat things to see and do in Omaha:
