We planned an overnight trip to Omaha recently on what turned out to be one of those bone-chilling cold days we have here in the Midwest. The forecast called for snow showers, 30-mile-an-hour winds, and temperatures dropping to below zero that night. Instead of cancelling the trip, we made a bold decision and decided to embrace the challenge of finding things to do in Omaha when it’s freezing. And, we got a great deal on our hotel rooms, never waited in a line, and had rock star parking everywhere we went!

Omaha has so many amazing sights to see and activities to offer, from the Number One rated zoo in the country, to the union station train depot where you can board a train, to a bridge that takes you to another state. All of these are wonderful reasons to visit Omaha, but add in the holiday season and family friendly Omaha gets even better!
Welcome to Part 2 of our family’s river adventures! My last post chronicled our time in Dubuque, Iowa and the fun we found near the Mighty Mississippi River. As I indicated then, our summer was filled with many little trips canvasing one side of the state to the other. If you haven’t guessed it already, you are about to read about our time near another beautiful body of water: The Missouri River.
September found us on the road, or in the air, as we headed towards Omaha, Nebraska and Council Bluffs, Iowa. Who would have guessed that we would make two visits to two different air and space museums on either end of our trip?

OMAHA, Neb. - How Midwestern is Omaha?
It’s so Midwestern that hotel rooms come with descriptions explaining the difference between tornado watches and tornado warnings. It’s so Midwestern that several important establishments are named Ak-Sar-Ben — that’s Nebraska spelled backward. It’s so Midwestern that a pedestrian bridge spanning the Missouri River is named Bob.

The Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge in Omaha is a very impressive structure — in both its architecture and especially in its quirky new personality.

The cliché is that Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium has everything from aardvarks to zebras. It does have zebras (of course), and it does have aardvarks, and if you’ve never seen an aardvark you really should because those things are totally bizarre.
