There are over 120 miles of paved trails throughout the City of Omaha with a number of those trails connecting to trails outside of the City. A map of the metro area trails titled "Paths of Discovery" is available online and in hard copy form at community centers, libraries, bike shops, and other establishments around the city. A listing and short description of some of the trails are listed below. All trails are concrete surfaced unless otherwise noted.

Omaha Trails Update – March 2024

A lot is happening with the City’s multi-use, recreational trails right now. Here is a quick summary of what’s going on. 


NOTE: ITEMS IN RED HIGHLIGHT CLOSED SECTIONS OF TRAILS.

144th STREET TRAIL
Trail is currently open with no closures.

BARRINGTON PARK CONNECTOR TRAIL
Trail is currently open with no closures.

BIG PAPIO TRAIL
Park Maintenance has finished the installation of a drain to address the water issue on a section of the trail between Pacific Street and S. 105th The trail is open to all trail users. Later this year Park Maintenance will return to remove and replace approximately 5 concrete panels.  We’ll send out a notice when that work is ready to begin.

Union Pacific Railroad is planning on working on the railroad bridge over the trail just north of Seymour Smith Park from March 8 – 10, 2024. They have said that the work will be light work and that there is no need to close the trail. All trail users should still use caution when in this area.  Questions regarding the bridge work should be directed to David Renz at dbrenz@up.com.

BLONDO STREET TRAIL (Big Papio Trail to N. 153rd Avenue)
Trail is currently open with no closures.

BOB KERREY PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE
Trail is currently open with no closures.

Construction of the “Baby Bob Bridge” has begun. At this time construction should not affect access to the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge.

BROOKHAVEN PARK TRAIL
Trail is currently open with no closures.

FIELD CLUB TRAIL
Trail is currently open with no closures.

FLANAGAN LAKE & RECREATION AREA
A section of the Flanagan Lake Trail on the west side of the lake, from the southwest side of the dam to Ida Street will be closed for the installation of a new interceptor sewer line. The trail will be closed for one year and will reopen in September 2024. Questions regarding the project and trail closure should be directed to Lamp Rynearson at 402-496-7498.

HAPPY HOLLOW (a.k.a. BOULEVARD) TRAIL
Trail is currently open with no closures.

HEARTLAND OF AMERICA PARK TRAILS
Trail is currently open with no closures.

HUMMEL PARK HIKING TRAILS
All hiking trails are currently open with no closures. 

KEYSTONE TRAIL
The sanitary sewer repair work between the north side of the pedestrian bridge that is south of Cass Street and the NFM Pedestrian Bridge has been completed. The trail along this section is open, however all trails users should use caution when traveling on this section of the trail. Any repairs and final cleanup of this section of the trail have yet to be completed due to weather conditions.

A section of the Keystone Trail between Maple Street and the intersection of 88th Street and Keystone Drive will be closed starting on March 1, 2024 so the Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District (NRD) can undertake drainage improvements. Trail will be closed through March 22 and reopen to all trail users on March 23, 2024. A suggested detour is to use the sidewalks along Keystone Drive.  Questions regarding the trail closure drainage work should be directed to Troy Meyer, PE, HDR, 402-399-1185;  troy.meyer@hdrinc.com.

LAMP PARK TRAIL

LEWIS AND CLARK LANDING PARK - TRAILS
Trail is currently open with no closures. 

MANDAN PARK
As of Thursday, February 22, 2024, the natural surface trails at the south end of Mandan Park will be closed for construction of the Mandan Park Nature Center. All natural surface trails from the turnaround south will be closed to all trail users until the completion of the nature center. This includes the GREEN TRAIL from the turnaround south, the entire ORANGE TRAIL and the entire RED TRAIL.  All Natural Surface Trails north of the turnaround remain open.  In addition, the park road and parking spaces from Harrison Street north to the turnaround are also closed to all park and trail users.  Closed trail sections, park road and parking spaces should reopen for use in April 2025. ONE PACIFIC PLACE PARK TRAIL BRIDGE CLOSURE
Trail is currently open with no closures.

RIVERFRONT TRAIL NORTH (Heartland of America Park to Washington County Line)
March 13 through March 14 – A few concrete panels on the section of the trail just south of the intersection of John Pershing Drive and Dick Collins Road is being repaired.

March 15 through March 19 – Section of the River front Trail on Riverfront Drive closed as girders are being set for the Baby Bob Bridge. Suggested detour around the closed section is to use the section of the trail along the Missouri River. For additional information contact Tim O’Bryan, PE at 402-991-0589; tobryan@benesch.com.

Miller’s Landing Park to Kiwanis Park – Trail is still under construction. Section where the trail crosses the railroad tracks still needs to be constructed.

RIVERFRONT TRAIL SOUTH (Hickory Street to Mt. Vernon Gardens Park)
Trail is currently open with no closures. 

SKYLINE TRAIL (West Dodge Road to North Main Street and Park Road – Elkhorn)
Trail is currently open with no closures.

SOUTH OMAHA TRAIL
Trail is currently open with no closures.

STANDING BEAR LAKE & RECREATION AREA TRAIL
The Floating Trail will remain closed at least through the Spring of 2024.  Trail will reopen once lake water levels return to normal elevations and the gangways can be reinstalled. For additional information on the status of the Floating Trail, contact Dennis E. TRANQUILITY PARK
Mountain bike trails are currently open with no closures. 

TURNER BOULEVARD TRAIL
Trail is currently open with no closures.

WEST PAPIO TRAIL
A section of the West PapioTrail from the trailhead parking area at Q Street to I-80 will be closed starting on Thursday, March 21, 2024, so the Omaha Airport Authority can remove trees.  Trail will be closed through Saturday, March 30, 2024 and reopen to all trail users on Sunday, March 31, 2024.  There is no suggested detour for this trail closure.  Questions regarding the trail closure and tree removal work should be directed to Patrick Dankof, Sr. Operations Supervisor, Omaha Airport Authority at Pat.dankof@flyoma.com or at 402-661-8070.

ZORINSKY LAKE & RECREATION AREA TRAIL
S. 168th Street Widening Project: The trails on and under S. 168th Street are closed to all trail users.  The trails will remain closed through November 2024.  The Public Works Department will be installing temporary traffic/pedestrian crossing signals at the lake entrances to allow for limited crossings of S. 168th Street.  For additional information on the project contact Troy Staroscik, Capital Construction & Street Maintenance, Transportation Manager, LPA/RC, Omaha Public Works Department, at troy.staroscik@cityofomaha.org or 402-444-5278.
