Why Omaha, Nebraska?

This year we celebrated our five year wedding anniversary. In true Murphy fashion we decided we needed to spend the week on a roadtrip. So we started looking at the usual suspects: Nashville, Shawnee Wine Trail and Madison but nothing seemed to fit what we were looking for. So when my husband, Mike, suggested Omaha, Nebraska, I figured that fit the bill for unique. But I asked the same question everyone else was asking, “Why Omaha?” Well, after five days I can confidently say I have the answer for everyone!

Omaha Restaurant Week: 1912 in Benson

The second week in September marks one of my favorite times of year – Omaha restaurant week. Local restaurants show off some serious swagger with a variety of 3 course meals at fixed prices (usually $20, $30 or $40 per person). I see it as an opportunity to jump outside of my culinary comfort zone and try a new restaurant. This year’s choice was 1912, a hip bar and grill located in the Benson neighborhood. Known for serving farm fresh food in a casual atmosphere, 1912 is officially my new favorite spot in Benson (the rooftop patio bar is a must).

Restaurant Week: Avoli Osteria

For me especially, Restaurant Week presents an opportunity to affordably try Omaha restaurants on which I may not otherwise splurge. A handful of the 65+ participating restaurants were especially enticing, as they’ve been on my ever-growing must-eat list for quite some time. Avoli Osteria, an Italian restaurant in the heart of the Dundee neighborhood, came out on top.
